I am curious about finding a solution to my scanner/printer problem. Im asking about to artists since they would have a better grip on the better options these days. Basically I am looking for a scanner/printer all in one. However I am trying to find one that wont pack up after 8 to 10 months.
I want:
-something with separate heads inside so that I can replace them as needed or if they clog up.
-something where there isnt a consequence for infrequent printing (my last Epson died like this because I conserve what is very expensive ink.)
-something that is good with both photo scans and colored pencil scans
I wish to avoid:
-Lexmark (crap!! My extremely nice and patient boyfriend even had it up to here with one and tossed it over our deck.)
-Epson (see above!)
-any printer that is too reliant on the included software. I run (K)Ubuntu and rather like it simple.
If you are not sure how to answer this, pleas feel free to ask around to other artist you might know. I do not care if I have to save up more money to get one of high quality. If I had to choose, I would chooose what wont cause that much more ewaste after I replace the unit again and again.

Re: Printer/Scanner Combo
Thu, May 22, 2008 - 10:58 PMRule of thumb: Any low-end printer is going to have a finite life you can count in months on your fingers and toes. It is not designed to be robust or to last. The more you use it the faster it will wear out.
Here is the solution. First of all, never buy an Epson under any circumstances. Second, whatever you do choose to buy, put it on a credit card that offers you a warranty. All credit card companies are different, call your CC and ask them what they offer, usually it will double your warranty, but some exclude computers, so def check first. This will give you 24 months, if you follow the CC rules to the letter, they will repair or replace it if it breaks.
That being said, I think HP is currently the best quality followed closely by Canon, check out their offerings, call you CC company, and throw down the plastic. -

Re: Printer/Scanner Combo
Fri, May 23, 2008 - 9:09 AMThanks so much. I do not have a CC card though but if bank cards suffice for some of these perks, than thats cool.
A few weeks ago, I asked a friend "Have you ever had a printer head clog with ink?" and they told me of the common problem for Epson printers that are not used on a regular basis. So yeah, I guess you have run into these problems too? Too bad because Epson was good at one point while HP fell short. Now its the other way around.
